He's Just Not That Into You: Great movie until the last 10 minutes

 Credit: wikipedia

We can’t help but feel intrigued when Hollywood attempts to give us the inconvenient harsh truth. Most of what Hollywood produces give the audience unrealistic expectations about love and life. When a movie comes forward and delivers something other than a happy perfect ending, it comes as a painful refreshment. We don’t feel good about the story, but our perspectives are opened as a result.

He’s Just Not That Into You is based off a book by the same name. The book did not have a storyline but instead provided structured details as to how men react to women and why they go running in the opposite direction. The punchline for each scenario is, of course, that he’s just not that into you.

Based off all these “men interpretations,” the movie revolves around the lives of several modern Baltimore couples who are all connected in some way. The characters cover the spectrum from serial first dates girl to the married couple who met in college, presumptively so that everyone in the audience will be able to relate to at least one of the characters.

We have seen our fair share of romantic comedies, and this one certainly tops the list in humor. Most of the laughs come at the expense of Gigi, the girl who goes on dates with lots of men but never for more than one date. Why? Because they become just not that into her right off the bat. Every embarrassing remark or act by her causes viewers to squirm. For once, Hollywood is showing how real girls find love: they stumble without grace.

There is cheating among the married couple, undoubtedly one of the most prevalent causes of the end of all marriages in the U.S. There is a couple that has been dating for nearly a decade, but one does not believe in marriage. Take a second and think that over. Can one truly fault that way of thinking? If over half of marriages end in divorce, doesn’t that necessarily mean that between two siblings, one will be divorced?

So in a nutshell, the movie does a great job delivering performances of the struggles and tensions among modern couples. It appears that gone are the days where love came organically at a young age and would last for a lifetime.

Then, the movie abruptly changes gears and gives most characters a happy ending, destroying the “harsh realities” theme that made the movie so appealing in the first place. We generally liked the movie, but it would have been more profound had the Hollywood endings been nixed.

Fashion on Fire: Inspired by The Hunger Games

If you have not read The Hunger Games I suggest you run out and fetch yourself the box set. The books are so consuming that anyone I mention the trilogy to exclaims “So good! I read all three in a week!” When you consider how busy our lives have become it’s no small miracle to get that much reading done. Some even shun social events because they are so engrossed in the story. It IS that good.

Like thousands of other people, I bought tickets for opening weekend because I cannot wait to see how the book comes to life. I must confess that I am extremely excited to see how Cinna’s brilliant designs are executed. We have scoured the web for a few sneak peeks of the costumes as well as the stars’ fashion at the movie premieres.

Five Guys We’d Like to See on The Bachelor

After quite the whirlwind finale (see previous post for details), we are now dreaming of a better upcoming season of The Bachelor. Here are the top five guys in our book:

Adam Levine

Who says tattoos are bad? He can sing us songs every night over a candlelit dinner. Rather than awful reality show background music, the theme of the season can be Maroon 5’s “She Will Be Loved.”

Zac Efron

High School Musical teen pop star no longer. Have you seen the previews for The Lucky One?

George Clooney

Age is no barrier to beautiful men. If things don’t work out with Stacy Keibler, we would love to see this silver fox choose his wife in a crowd young and beautiful ladies.

Tim Tebow

Such a fetching fella (pun intended)…we can only imagine what kinds of adventurous group dates he would plan for the ladies. Unfortunately, according to recent news, Tebow has turned down the offer to be on The Bachelor.

Ronnie from Jersey Shore

Fist pumping through the night and using outrageous amounts of hair product. Since breaking up with on-and-off girlfriend Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola, it seems Ronnie is an eligible bachelor.

Who would you like to see on The Bachelor? Let us know by leaving a comment!

BachelorNation: Anyone Else Play Bengo?

 credit: https://www.facebook.com/TheBachelor

With the Bachelor season finale looming over us in less than 24 hours, we are gearing up for the “most dramatic season final yet!” (Thank you, Chris Harrison). Standing by for the big event are fake roses, expertly picked out cocktail attire and a stack of BENGO. Somewhere in a retirement community Bingo is wallowing in self-pity over this caricature. Bengo’s fields are hilariously Bachelor-esque: Ben staring off into the distance with inner monologue; “Are you nervous;” “Fallen for Ben” “My biggest fear” “Connection” and other clichés the franchise has capitalized on over the lifetime of the series.

At first it seemed like Bengo was a perfectly natural addition to our Monday night ritual. But after further reflection I realized that I am dismayed with the show and that Bengo is the necessary ingredient to keep my interest piqued. Over 16 seasons of the Bachelor there has yet to be a successful – never mind happy – ending. (Flip-flopping does not count. Sorry, Jason).  So forgive me if I am not buying into the concept of journey to true love or that these people “have never had stronger feelings for anybody else.” The women are always “incredible.” I am fairly certain that ABC gives the contestants a sheet with approved adjectives and phrases. Either that, or the Bachelors have had very poor communication skills.

In light of the poor results, it is no wonder that I look for entertainment in other facets of the Bachelor. Bengo certainly helps. But Courtney has been the true star of my Bachelor season. Say what you will, the girl is beautiful and endlessly entertaining. The other contestants complained about Courtney’s drive to win as if they came for the big sleepover. If I were Ben I’d want the one that wants me.

Courtney had a tough time on the show because she spoke her mind. Her mind, seemingly spiteful and venomous, presented a problem for the other girls. But not for me. Not because I don’t  believe in true love. I very much do. I just do not believe it can be found on the Bachelor. I think it’s time to stop pretending that we are watching this show because we are romantics and admit that this is a guilty pleasure. If we just embrace it for what it is – the drama we crave but hope stays far away from our personal lives –  we will all come to appreciate Courtney for the immense entertainment value she brought to the show and hope for a Courtney each season.

She was in it to win it and I respect that. Did the other girls not come to win? Don’t get me wrong, I love my girlfriends. But if one of them was going after my boyfriend I would deliver the kill-shot too.

Love Roundup - october

Engagement Rumors
Trace Cyrus + Brenda Song - Confirmed. Pregnancy rumors emerged a few months ago. while that is yet to be resolved, the couple announced on Twitter that the engagement is real. What else is real? The tattoo teardrops on his face.
Francis Bean Cobain + Isaiah Silva - Semi-confirmed? Daughter of Courtney Love and the late Kurt Cobain is getting married according to a recent Facebook status change.
Kaley Cuoco + Josh Resnik - Confirmed. The Big Bang Theory actress is getting hitched!
Frankie Muniz + Elycia Turnbow - Confirmed. Where has he been since Malcolm in the Middle? Courting Ms. Elycia, apparently. Congrats!

Fire and Woes
Alexa Ray Joel - After battling depression a couple years ago, the Piano Man’s daughter has confessed in an interview that she contracted HPV from her ex-boyfriend.
Michael Lohan - Lilo’s dad was arrested twice within a 24 hour period this week over domestic abuse claims by his on-and-off girlfriend. Why is he in the news? Because it’s amazing how a dysfunctional family is rich and famous for no apparent reason.

Trouble in Paradise - Breakups and Divorces
Kim Kardashian + Chris Humphries - Confirmed. They married in front of cameras and are now filing for divorce. Calculating all media rights, they each net $2k/hour. Not bad.
Ronnie + Sammi - Jersey Shore couple has called it quits. They’ve broken up before though, so we don’t really know what to make of this announcement.

Babies/families
Justin Bieber + Selena Gomez - Parents everywhere would flip a cow if these two young loves were pregnant. But the couple did in fact recently adopt a puppy. Baby steps. Pun intended.
Rachel Uchitel + Matt Hahn - Famous for being the other (far less attractive) woman Tiger Woods cheated on perfect Elin Nordegren with, Rachel is now pregnant with Matt’s child. The two wed in Las Vegas last month.

Jaw-dropping Celeb Divorce Settlements

Phil Collins and Orianne Cevey

AP Photo/ Keystone, Urs Flueeler
Cevey received an estimated $47 million as part of her divorce settlement. Not too shabby.

Paul McCartney and Heather Mills

Dailymail UK

After a long battle turned ugly, Mills reportedly received a staggering $49 million. I don’t know what else to say about this, except that it would have been a lot cooler to quote $50 million.

James Cameron and Linda Hamilton

Huffpost

Their marriage sank as quickly as the Titanic. Just 18 months after marriage, Hamilton took HALF of Cameron’s $100 million earnings from the Oscar-winning film. “I’ll never let go,” Kate Winslet’s character whispers to the most handsome corpse at the end of Titanic. Never let go until you get the cha-ching.

Kevin Costner and Cindy Silva

Former wife of the Dances with Wolves star danced away with an astonishing $80 million. Pardon me while I cry myself to sleep.

Harrison Ford and Melissa Mathison

Jim Smeal/WireImage.com

According to IMDb (the source of all my movie knowledge), Ford raked in $150 per week during his early days. Fast forward some decades, a few major successes, and a broken marriage, and ex-wife Mathison walked away with $85 million.

Madonna and Guy Ritchie

Jason Kempin/WireImage

In exchange for her faux British accent, the Material Girl purportedly forked over somewhere between $76 and $92 million to Ritchie. Ouch. Ouch.

Steven Spielberg and Amy Irving

A solid $100 million settlement to Irving, whom I have never heard of before. You may know Spielberg as the man who directed a film about Japanese geishas featuring an almost exclusive Chinese cast.

Neil Diamond and Marcia Murphey

I thought diamonds were forever! Murphey allegedly fetched a settlement of a cool $150 million from the country singer.

Michael Jordan and Juanita Jordan

 © Stan Honda/AFP/Getty Images

MJ supposedly paid Juanita $168 million after Juanita filed for divorce following their decade long marriage. Slam. Dunk. Marriage. Settlement.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver

Gold Wong/Getty Images

California is a community property state, and all wages and income earned during marriage will be presumed to be community property and thus split 50/50 upon divorce. The news of Arnold’s love child was quite a shock, but the fact that Arnold has accumulated wealth topping $500 million means Shriver could be entitled to $250 million. She is the terminator of his bank account.

And the #1 spot for costliest divorce goes to…

Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren

Even the hottest people get cheated on. What is wrong with this world? Luckily, Elin has settled for a skyscraping $750 million and is moving on with her single, fabulous life.
